Paraskevi Papachristou

Paraskevi Papachristou was born on 17 April, 1989. She is a Greek long jumper and triple jumper. This athlete is mostly known for her gold medals (2 of them) that she won at the European Athletics U23 Championships and she was a Greek representative at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. Before Olympic Games in London, 2012, she was removed from the Greek team! This was done by the Greek Olympic Committee, and the reason was her racist comments on Twitter.

Papachristou won the bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in 2008. In 2009 she participated in the European Indoor Championships. She qualified with a jump of 14.47 meters, but due to injury in the finals, she failed to register a valid jump. In the same year, she won gold medal European U23 Championships and a bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games. In 2011 she failed to reach the finals at the European Athletics Indoor Championships. That year, she achieved her best jump of 14.72 meters in Chania.

The world’s record achieved by a European U23 athlete was 14.79 meters by Anna Pyatykh. In 2011 Papachristou defended her gold medal at the European U23 Championships in Czech Republic.
The reason for her removal from the Greek team, before the 2012 Olympic Games, was her comment on Twitter. In that comment she said that there are a lot of Africans in Greece, so mosquitoes from West Nile will eat homemade food! This was linked to a West Nile virus outbreak in Greece. She apologized for making this comment!

In 2013, the Greek athletics federation suspended her athletic benefits. She will regain if she starts training with an approved coach.
