Cornel Borbely New FIFA ethics chief won't be pushed around

At first glance Cornel Borbely, a Swiss attorney that is younger than many professional footballers, does not seem to be the right guy to replace Michael Garcia as FIFA’s Ethics Chief.

In December, a disillusioned Garcia, a former attorney in the U.S. who has a good track record when it comes to dealing with complicated, international high profile cases, resigned stating that he was no longer making any useful progress in the organization and that FIFA “lacked leadership.”

\The departure of Garcia who was regarded by many as the person who was likely to end the problems that FIFA is facing was another sign that FIFA is unable of reforming itself.

At only 36, Borbely, has been promoted from his previous role which saw him act as a deputy to Garcia to FIFA’s chief ethics investigator.
In his first encounter with the press as FIFA’s ethics chief, Borbely said that he will not be pushed around rejecting the notion that he will be acting of Sepp Blatter’s orders.

“This is absurd and any such claim is not founded in any facts that I could comprehend or cite. I can only emphasize that I am not an employee of FIFA,” he said.

"I run my own law firm and I don’t take any orders at all from FIFA -- none whatsoever. I alone decide whether to open, conduct and conclude an investigation and on its result.

"I am completely independent of any FIFA officials. Otherwise I couldn’t, and wouldn’t, do this job. Nobody interferes -- neither the (FIFA) executive committee nor anybody else."
