He was born on August 9, 1982 to Daisy Gay and Greg Mitchell in Lexington, Kentucky in a modest family. Athletics was something which was there in his DNA as his mothers as well as grandmother were sprinters. His older sister, Tiffany was also a quick sprinter and there was a stiff competition between the two. They were encouraged by their mother to run and trained in the hills nearby. The best part of him was that he never allowed success to get into his head. He respected his rivals and had that humility till the end.

Tyson has several medals under his belt. He won numerous medals in major international competitions, which includes a gold medal sweep in the 100m, 200m, and 4*100 m relay at the 2007 Osaka World Championships. This makes him number two after Maurice Greene in winning all the three events in the same world championship. He is also the four-time American champion in the highly competitive race of 100m. he won Jesse Owens Award twice and the IAAF World Athlete of the Year in 2007, and also the coveted award of ESPY in 2008 and 2011.
